Orlando Therapist shares how to Find a Teen Therapist

By Elizabeth Chambers, LMHC

Orlando has a lot to offer teens - theme parks, wonderful natural parks, springs, and the beach is only an hour away! Sometimes, however, we need to extend our search beyond fun destinations. There are times we need to search for a teen therapist in Orlando.

As a parent looking for the right therapist for your teen can be overwhelming and anxiety-provoking. You know your teen needs help, but you’re not sure what direction to take so that your teen can get the support they need.

Searching for a teen counselor can be a daunting task. You want to find a great counselor to help them feel like themselves again, but where do you even start your search?

My name is Elizabeth Chambers, I am an Orlando therapist specializing in teen therapy. Although the start of your search may be overwhelming, I am here to provide a guide to help you find the right therapist in Orlando for your teen.

1. Include Your Teen’s Opinion to Guide Your Search

One thing I typically encourage parents to do is ask their teen what they would want in a counselor. Although not every person may know exactly what qualities they are looking for in a therapist, some have a general idea or opinion about what traits or characteristics are important to them. For example, a common consideration is the therapist’s age. Some teens may feel more comfortable with a younger counselor and some may prefer a counselor who is older. Ask your teen what gender they would prefer when seeing a therapist. Including your teen in the search process will help them feel more comfortable with their therapist when they begin teen counseling.

2. Google Search Teen Therapist Orlando

People often start their search for a counselor by how they research many things - searching on Google! Looking specifically for “teen therapist Orlando” will help you find a therapist that works specifically with teens. While many therapists may see teenagers, you will want to find a therapist that has experience working with teens.

3. Search on Psychology Today

Another place to search is Psychology Today, a popular website to find a therapist in Orlando. On this website, each counselor has a profile and a picture. You will find information about their office location, counseling approach, the population they see, and the cost of sessions. This can be helpful to determine who may be close by, their specialties, and if anything in their profile resonates with you or your teen.

4. Research the Therapist’s Specialties

There are many therapists in Orlando. Some therapists have general practices and others have more specialized practices. As mentioned above, you will want to make sure your therapist has experience working with teens. You can also research additional specialties. For example, I specialize in working with teens that struggle with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and self-harming behaviors. Other therapists specialize in eating disorders. When finding the best fit for your teen, you’ll want to make sure the therapist has experience with your child’s concerns.

6. Ask about the Counselor’s Availability

Asking about both how soon they are available and at what times can narrow your search for a teen therapist in Orlando. If you are wanting to start counseling for your teen as soon as you can, then it is helpful to know if the potential counselors you are looking at have a waitlist or not. Additionally, some counselors offer after-school appointments whereas others may only offer daytime sessions. If you know that your teen needs certain days and times for their sessions, it is good to know if the counselor can meet these needs.

7. Inquire about Cost Per Session

This is an important subject to bring up for budgeting purposes. Are you able to afford their session rate in your monthly budget? Do they take your insurance if you are wanting to use it? These are key questions to ask to narrow your search while finding an Orlando therapist for your teen.

8. Ask about Frequency of Sessions

How often the counselor intends to meet with your teen can be useful information for multiple reasons. First, if you are wanting someone who can meet with your teen on a weekly basis, finding someone who can accommodate this schedule is important. This can help you get an idea of how much time you and your teen will be committing to counseling sessions and determine if you can fit this in your schedule as well. Second, this helps with budgeting because the more frequent sessions are, the more cost you need to plan for in your budget.

9. Schedule a Consultation Call with the Teen Therapist in Orlando

Finally, once you have narrowed down your search based on the above questions, it can be helpful to have a consultation call with the counselor you intend to have your teen meet with. Many counselors offer a free, brief consultation call prior to booking your first session with them. Refer to 8 Questions to Ask a Teen Counselor in Orlando when having your consultation call.
