About 10 years before I became a counselor in Orlando, I started having what felt like crippling anxiety. I was just living a normal life and doing normal things like working, dating, exercising, walking my dog, and spending time with friends and family. Out of nowhere, I started having these mind-consuming, body-consuming anxiety episodes. I went to therapist after therapist looking for relief. As soon as I began working with a therapist that included the body in talk therapy, I started to feel better.
I soon realized the "episodes" I described were actually parts and pieces of unresolved trauma that were bubbling up in my present day life. In other words, I was experiencing PTSD. I saw many counselors before I found a somatic-oriented therapist that could help me integrate the physical and mental symptoms I was experiencing. That is why it is so important in my therapy practice to include a somatic approach when working with trauma. I use a unique blend of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and EMDR.
So, what is Sensorimotor Psychotherapy? It is a body-oriented talking therapy that works with the body’s nervous system to regulate arousal. In session, we will use mindfulness to explore what is happening NOW when you talk about distressing events. We will explore how all three: your body, your emotions, and your thoughts are organized around the distress in your life and we will work with all three to begin the healing process.
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing is an evidenced-based method for treating many mental health concerns, such as trauma, anxiety, and phobias. It helps the brain reorganize the traumatic past into a calm and cohesive narrative.
If you're like me, you don't want to continue to relive your difficult past in your day to day life.
