Stress and Anxiety Therapy Orlando: The Leadership Thermostat That Sets Your Team’s Culture

By: Lauran Hahn, LMHC

We often think of leadership in terms of output, what’s accomplished, how quickly, how well. But underneath every decision, deadline, and meeting is something quieter but just as powerful: the energy you're bringing into the room.

Every team has an emotional tone. Sometimes it's buzzing with anxiety. Other times it’s sluggish or tense or scattered. That tone isn’t just about personalities or work stress. It often starts with you, the leader. Your nervous system sets the pace, the pressure, and the culture. That’s not a burden, it’s an opportunity.

Thermostat vs. Thermometer Leadership

There’s a metaphor I often use with leaders and leadership teams:

  • A thermometer reflects the temperature of the room. It reacts to what’s happening around it.

  • A thermostat sets the temperature. It intentionally shifts the climate.

When a leader is reactive, overwhelmed, or emotionally checked out, the team absorbs that energy often unconsciously. But when a leader can regulate, pause, and lead from clarity, the entire culture begins to shift. Regulation is contagious. And so is dysregulation.

Resilient leadership isn’t about doing more or being stoic. It’s about leading from a steady, grounded place, especially when things are hard.

What Gets in the Way?

If showing up that way feels out of reach lately, you’re not alone. Many of the leaders I work with feel trapped in a cycle of pressure and performance. They’re stretched too thin to be thoughtful. They're afraid that setting boundaries might be interpreted as weakness. And often, they’re trying to support everyone else while quietly running on fumes. It’s not that they’re failing—it’s that they’re trying to lead without the space, structure, or support needed to lead well.

Why Nervous System Awareness Matters

The nervous system isn’t just a therapy buzzword; it’s a leadership tool. When your body is stuck in a chronic state of stress, everything becomes harder: communication, decision-making, creativity, empathy. Your team feels it, even if no one says it. But when you’re able to stay regulated—when you have the capacity to pause, to notice your own energy, and to respond intentionally—you create psychological safety for others to do the same.

Here’s what that might look like in practice:

  • Taking five minutes between meetings to reset

  • Saying, “I need a moment,” when you feel overwhelmed

  • Modeling breaks and boundaries instead of pushing through

  • Naming when things feel off instead of avoiding the discomfort. These are small shifts, but they create big ripple effects!

A Quick Leadership Check-In

Here’s a simple question I offer to the leaders I work with: Before you walk into your next meeting, pause and ask:
“What energy am I bringing into this room—and is it helping?” You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to be calm all the time. You just have to be willing to notice and reset. The more you can lead from awareness, the more resilient your team becomes.

Regulated Leaders Create Regulated Teams

When you’re grounded, your team can focus. When you’re present, your team feels safe. You don’t need to overhaul your leadership style. You just need to start with the one thing you can control—you. Let your nervous system be the thermostat. Set the tone. The culture will follow.
