Stress and Anxiety Therapist Explains What a Resilient Team Looks Like
Written by: Lauran Hahn, LMHC
You can feel it—even if no one’s saying it out loud. Your team is stretched thin. The spark is gone. Motivation is dipping, communication feels strained, and the energy in the room has shifted. You’re starting to worry that burnout isn’t just a personal issue—it’s become part of the culture.
You want to make things better, but you're not sure where to start. You don’t want to pile more on your people—you want to create a work environment that’s actually healthy and sustainable.
As a therapist and workplace consultant in Orlando specializing in stress, anxiety, and burnout, I help professionals and leaders create resilient workplaces—where people are supported, connected, and able to thrive without burning out.
So… What Does a Resilient Team Look Like?
In my work, these are the 10 traits I see most consistently in strong, resilient teams:
1. Psychological Safety - People feel safe to speak honestly, ask for help, and share feedback—without fear of judgment or punishment. You’ll hear honest questions in meetings, and team members won’t go silent when things get tough.
2. Shared Goals - There’s a clear sense of direction—and a reason to care. Everyone knows what they’re working toward and how it connects to something bigger than themselves.
3. Clarity - Expectations are named, roles are understood, and communication is direct. There’s less second-guessing, fewer dropped balls, and more confident follow-through.
4. Adaptability - The team can flex without falling apart when things shift. They pivot together and problem-solve instead of panicking or finger-pointing.
5. Trust - Leaders and team members do what they say they’ll do—and own it when they don’t. Accountability feels like support, not punishment.
6. Emotional Awareness - People can name when they’re struggling—and they’re met with support, not shame. Mental health is normalized, and stress signals are taken seriously.
7. Ownership - Team members feel responsible for their part—and empowered to do it well. They take initiative, follow through, and care about the impact of their work.
8. Connection - There’s a felt sense of belonging. People know they matter beyond just their output. Colleagues celebrate wins, check in on each other, and laugh together—without it feeling forced.
9. Repair - Conflict happens—but it gets addressed, not buried. Hard conversations are part of the culture, and relationships grow stronger because of them.
10. Recovery - There’s space to reset. Breaks are taken, time off is respected, and no one’s expected to be “on” 24/7. Rest isn’t seen as laziness—it’s understood as a strategic investment in sustainability.
How Does Your Team Stack Up?
Take a moment to reflect on the list above:
Where does your team thrive?
Where is there tension, silence, or confusion?
Where have stress and survival mode taken over what used to feel connected and clear?
You don’t need to check every box. Leadership starts with awareness—and resilience grows in cultures where people feel safe enough to take a real look at what’s not working. The teams that thrive aren’t the ones that avoid hard things. They’re the ones that name them—and move through them, together.
One Small Thing You Can Do This Week
Pick one trait from the list above and reflect honestly: “What would it look like to strengthen this on my team?” Then, invite your team into the conversation. No pressure to fix—just a spirit of curiosity.
