10 Services to Seek to Strengthen your Anxiety Treatment

Orlando Therapist Recommending Supplementary Services for Anxiety Treatment…

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a very common modality for Anxiety Treatment. It is a great form of Anxiety Treatment, however, it is confined to the office of a therapist. So, what about the time between appointments? What about a holistic healing approach?

As an anxiety therapist in Orlando, I recognize the importance of being involved in supplementary services for the treatment of Anxiety. I believe it is important to provide my clients, and you, methods and support that can be taken outside of my office and into your everyday life.

Here are some of my top recommendations for supplementary services when treating anxiety:

Rolfing

Rolfing is a form of bodywork. When a person is stressed, they often feel that their body is “tied up in knots. ” Rolfing helps to untie the knots which creates a more relaxed and stronger structure for your body.

I recently interviewed Lu Mueller-Kaul, from Balance Orlando who said that,

“Relief from anxiety is a welcomed side effect of Rolfing (just as pain relief). Working directly on the body in different depths gives the brain clear feedback on sensations that go from very pleasant to mildly uncomfortable. In a welcoming, accepting, and safe setting the client often brings up personal struggles and can process them through the physical experience. Manual therapy, in general, has been proven to relieve anxiety, and the clear reduction of stress hormones has been shown in various studies. In Rolfing, particularly, there is additional work with posture and movement so clients can consciously, under gentle encouragement, learn to change the way they face the world, using their experience of gravity as a grounding force that not only keeps them upright, but also empowers them to thrive.”

Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy helps you feel calm by focusing your attention on your breathing and away from your thoughts. With your attention away from your thoughts, you body is able to relax and reduce the tension in your body.

When stressed, the fluid (hormones and neurotransmitters) production reduces in the cranium and sacrum (your head and pelvis). Craniosacral therapy gently manipulates your head and pelvis to stimulate the flow of fluid that help release blockages that keep emotions trapped in the body.

Therefore, your stresses are able to be released from your body.

Reiki

Reiki is an energy healing technique that helps your body balance itself by removing the blocks to your energy centres, known as your chakras.

Reiki works by channeling positive energy into your body through light touches on your face, back, torso, or wherever is needing healing, by a Reiki practitioner.

Yoga

A healthy body is a healthy mind. The overall practice of yoga can turn on the relaxation response, allowing both the body and mind to gain a sense of calm. Yoga will also help to increase flexibility, lengthen, balance and ease the tight muscles caused by anxiety, which in turn will create more physical comfort.

I recently interviewed Natalia G. Galindo, from Live Oak Wellness who said that,

“Yoga has multiple tools for anxiety. Although most believe yoga to be a physical exercise, yoga actually has 8 parts. Without getting too deep in yoga philosophy, physical asana is only one of those 8 parts. Additionally, the path of yoga includes breath, concentration, and meditation among others. Meditation, visualization, and focusing on breathing can help with letting go of worry and fear that anxiety elicits. The overall practice of yoga can create a  relaxation response, allowing both the body and mind to gain a sense of calm and ease.”

Meditation

Meditation works by focusing the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity which allows you to slow down and notice life around you. It can help reduce anxiety provoking thoughts and bring feelings of balance, calm, and focus.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is based on the belief that we all have the tools we need for our own healing within ourselves. Hypnotherapy can be compared to an intentional guided meditation. In a session, you’ll be fixated on something around you while focusing on your senses.

I recently interviewed Zachary Dodson, MA, LMHC and Jesse Lyon, LMHC from T-F Hypnotherapy who said that,

“Clinical hypnotherapy allows clients to tap into the power of the unconscious mind by fixating their conscious mind into a trance-like state. This technique allows clients to process their experiences using metaphors, while being more receptive to therapeutic suggestions. This is very different from your typical talk therapy, as clients do not have to verbalize their experiences during the trance.“

Acupuncture

Acupuncture relieves stress and anxiety by releasing the blockages of energy in your body.

During an Acupuncture session, small needles in various thicknesses and lengths, are placed on the Acupuncture points in your body to stimulate and open the energy blockages. Acupuncture points are the points where the blockages of energy are presumed to be occurring.

Chiropractic

Misalignments of the spine (a major part of our central nervous system) can interrupt our hormone balance which can contribute to stress and anxiety.

Chiropractic care can:

  • Make you feel less stressed and relax your muscles.

  • Help you if you are struggling with insomnia.

  • Trigger positive hormones in your body which influences your overall health.

  • Reduce blood pressure and stress symptoms.

Chiropractic care works by manipulating the spine with small, sudden movements by a practitioner.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is the manipulation of the soft tissues in your body. It helps the body relax by releasing muscle tension, one of the most common results of stored emotion, by decreasing our stress hormone (cortisol) and increasing happy hormones (serotonin and dopamine).

Nutrition

A healthy lifestyle is an important part of reducing your anxiety triggers - food and nutrition play an important part in your healthy lifestyle. A nutritionist can help you find triggers related to what you are ingesting throughout the day and recommend food items to take out of your diet and add to your diet.

For example, they could recommend that you take out your afternoon coffee (you need the energy fix but it triggers your anxiety) and replace it with a green apple.
